I like you, Betty.

Bitter, much?

Look, I understand I’m a cynical broad. I can be judgemental and often jump to my own conclusions. But I’m never just a flat out bitch, and am always willing to give people the benefit of the doubt. Some people could stand to do the same.

Some background: I live in a very touristy place. I have lived here for years, but keep my home state’s plates on my car, mostly because it’s far cheaper to register it. I have a part time job wherein I have to deal with these tourists. Some are great and friendly. Some are self-important twats. This is a story about the latter.

Recently, I had to drive my vehicle onto a walking path. This is not an uncommon occurrence, there are always people driving on this particular path. It was for my job, I was wearing a uniform, and I was following another car. When I drove up to park it on a very wide stretch of this path, a woman and her young daughter (let’s say around 4) were walking towards me. I was moving very slowly, just trying to park, aware of the large number of pedestrians, and there was no way I was going to hit them.

This woman hardly moves out of the way and then says quite loudly, as she noticed my windows were open, “Over here sweetie, people from *my state* obviously don’t know not to drive on the sidewalk.”

I had the good sense not to say anything to her, but this angers me. You really ought to make sure you have all the facts before you make condescending remarks about other people in front of your child. Kids that age suck up absolutely everything that you do, and raging bitchiness is not particularly something you want her to learn. I pity you when she becomes a teenager, because you’re going to get it back in spades. I have to admit, that thought brings me comfort.
